1. Decide how much space you will need and can afford.
The most common size is 10ft x 10ft. This may seem like a large space, but be careful. Many exhibitors pack too much into the booth creating a sense of clutter. Keep your space open, defined and welcoming.
2. Determine your marketing message.
Choose one really strong message or special offer to draw your customers into the booth. If you have their attention and interests, then there will be plenty of time to determine their needs and delivery a focused sales pitch.
3. Image is everything.
In some cases, a trade show exhibit can be your audiences first impression of your company. This is where you will want to present a cohesive brand presence. Your exhibit, clothes and literature should all compliment each other and be a reflection of the product or service you provide. Keep your color palette simple and your graphics readable. From 20 to 50ft away, people should have a general idea of what you do within seconds. The key is to stand out in a crowd of exhibitors all competing for the same audience.
4. Light up your booth.
Many exhibitors make the mistake of not buying lights. Even though the exhibit hall is lit, your competitors will have overhead spotlights flooding their name, message and booth. A properly lit trade show booth will be much more inviting than the booth next to it cast in a shadow. Bring extension cords and order the electrical service in advance.
5. Have a podium or counter top for taking customer information.
Incorporating a podium or counter top into your trade show booth is invaluable. Whether you have a card swipe machine, laptop or pen and paper, make sure you have a way of collecting important details about your customers. No one likes to talk to a salesperson at the trade show only to receive a generic follow up call to find out their needs.
In the end, no matter what your trade show booth design looks like, it's all about the customers experience. Have fun, be real and make your audience love you.
